Celebrated every June 8, it’s a UN-recognised day to push for global collective actions to protect our oceans and marine resources. 

It's a four-week event held by Hong Kong Sustainable Seafood Coalition and Choose Right Today initiative. Over 45 businesses raise awareness of seafood sustainability by providing sustainably sourced seafood that is good for the ocean — and your plate — from June.

One-third of global fish stocks are overfished, and more than 90 percent are at their limit. Choosing sustainable seafood helps protect oceans and keep seafood bountiful for present and future generations.

It refers to aquatic products that have been farmed or caught in a way with minimal impact on the environment, fish stocks and other marine life, through traceable sourcing and responsible management.

Look for labels from one of the schemes recognised by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), such as MSC, ASC, BAP, MEL and more. Recommendations by seafood guides are also helpful, like WWF-Hong Kong Seafood Guide, Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and Seafood Risk Assessment. Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore are cities of seafood lovers, and significant global trade hubs. For example, seafood imports to Hong Kong come from over 150 countries/territories, while the seafood consumption rate per capita is 3 times the global average. That gives us huge power to drive seafood sustainability through everyday dining.
